Revue Faire n°24: A Theater Identity

First monograph of the Franco-Iranian artist.

This monographic catalogue looks back over the first 15 years of work by Iranian artist Elika Hedayat through more than 110 reproductions. Two of these are on a 1:1 scale, and a detailed set offers a comparison of the dimensions of the works in relation to each other.

Françoise Docquiert introduces the issues at stake in her practice with an essay, complemented by an interview with Joana P.R. Neves.

Born 1979 in Tehran, Elika Hedayat lives and works between Paris and Tehran. Arriving in France in 2004, she was admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Annette Messager's studio, from wich she graduated with the Jury's congratulations in 2008.

For her works, Elika Hedyat often uses testimonies and experimental documentaries stage in a dreamlike and imaginary universe. Her stories are contemporary and her characters are real. All of her works revisits historical references, transferring them to the field of personnal experience, mainly using the various possibilities of her repertoire as a narrative document and memory retrieval tool. Reality, memory and imagination come together in a personal story under different forms : drawing, video, documentary, painting and performance.

Art brut has never ceased to shake up the history of art and nourish minds resistant to norms as it questions classic notions of art and creation as well as those relating to the normal and the pathological. Phylactère est une revue annuelle à voix multiples, née du désir d’explorer l’écriture de l’oralité et les possibilités de retranscription de performance, à travers des visions authentiques, subjectives et spontanées. Donnant la parole à des amateur·ice·s, artiste·s, designer·s et penseur·se·s, la revue Phylactère regroupe des écrits de transition, assumant tous les glissements entre un script, l’action réalisée et sa traduction, avec une attention extrême et aventureuse pour la manière dont les contextes, gestes, émotions et espaces sont mis en jeu lors de cette retranscription.

Initiée par Roxanne Maillet et Auriane Preud’homme à l’invitation de Camille Videcoq lors de la résidence Entrée Principale (Marseille), Phylactère conjugue pratique graphique et éditoriale et démarche curatoriale en intégrant au processus de publication l’organisation de différents événements. 

Pour son deuxième numéro, Phylactère prend pour titre l’onomatopée Oh là là !

PROVENCE UNCONSCIOUS deep dives into the cosmological pool that shapes the collective unconscious and takes a look at the relevance of Jung's ideas in relation to contemporary art and fashion.

PROVENCE UNCONSCIOUS draws inspiration from the Zurich-based office's proximity to the C.G. Jung Institute in Küsnacht—recently and notably visited by Pamela Anderson, who also appears in the publication. PROVENCE UNCONSCIOUS focuses on the work of three US-American artists—Mike Kelley, Matt Mullican, and Jason Rhoades—whose practices orbit around the themes of psychoanalysis and the unconscious. The issue also features collaged analog photographs of  Laura Langer's spiral paintings, and a manuscript-style dream archive: over 30 hand-written or drawn submissions by artists, curators, jungians, and writers. Additional sections include, among many other things, jewelry by Bernhard Schobinger, photographs by Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, and a curatorial exploration of Emma Jung—analyst and wife of C.G. Jung—shedding light on the often-overlooked feminine legacy within Jungian thought.

PROVENCE UNCONSCIOUS didn't include any cooking recipes. And no, PROVENCE is not a magazine—but if it were, it would probably be the most radical one among its contemporary art peers.
