Pedagogies of the Art Proximate

Sophie Mak-Schram

Pedagogies of the Art-Proximate reflects on the changing landscape of contemporary art’s relationship to formal education, through tracing a history of theories, practices and protests across the twentieth century. In a context of educational funding crises, cuts, and changes, and within a wider frame of shifting understandings of how we know things and who or what we learn from, what can learning mean and in what ways can it happen?

Going beyond a simple chronology of art schools, this book considers the many ways in which art and education meet: how museums learn from those they invite in, how art objects become pedagogical tools, and what happens when a school is an artwork (or vice versa). The book proposes art-proximate practices as a new term for an increasingly blurry realm of practices that include socially engaged art, relational art, and activist art, as well as ‘non art’ forms. Weaving together auto-ethnographic, art historical and educational studies, Pedagogies of the Art-Proximate is about what art puts us in the way of learning – and why that might be politically, socially, and critically urgent today.

Uncommon Fruits for Common Recipes

Laura Savina, Ola Korbańska

Cooking €10.00

About a year after the release of Who is cooking? The recipes of IZBA, a new fruit (!) of the collaboration between Laura Savina and Ola Korbańska has arrived. Bright orange like a perfectly ripe apricot, this small book is a juicy blend of recipes, memories, travels, tips, and musings on how to enjoy the sweet treasures we find in our gardens or at the market.

What should you do with an entire row of uva fragola when you can’t turn them into wine? How do you prepare an aperitif that will astonish even the most demanding guests? What sent us over the moon when we were children? Can a recipe catapult us to the other side of the world? Is it possible to serve a stunning dish using just one ingredient?

But before you roll up your sleeves and start peeling, slicing, and squeezing, let the authors surprise you with a special chapter devoted to fruit in its purest, most essential form: Fruit Tricks, a collection of unexpected things you never knew you could do with fruit.

Whether you’re a serial fruit eater or someone who’s never ventured too far into this colorful, sticky world, Uncommon Fruits for Common Recipes offers the perfect excuse to take your first step into the endless universe of textures and flavors that nature has to offer.

Log: Notes on Building-with documents the construction of a wooden structure in Topolò/Topolove and expands it into a reflection on craft, collaboration and situated making. Through photographs and texts, the book approaches the idea of building-with from four different angles: building-with context, building-with materials, building-with tools and building-with others.

TRANSMISSIONS: Radio Essays on Edges, Crossings and Narrowcasting Borderlands

Aljaž Škrlep

Transmissions: Radio Essays on Edges, Crossings and Narrowcasting Borderlands gathers radio essays—created as part of Robida Collective’s project Radio drugega/The Other Radio—which reveal that to speak of “the border” is never to speak of a single line. There are political borders, conceptual borders, bodily borders; carnivalesque borders, where order collapses into play; linguistic and cultural borders, where words slip between languages and where accents become geographies; archival borders, separating memory from forgetting; borders of abandonment, where life and death enter into a dialectical ballet; economic borders, drawn by property, ownership, enclosure; borders of matter, space and time; acoustic borders, where the voice meets noise and incomprehensibility; cosmic borders, where meteors cross the thin edge of air; ecological borders, porous and breathing, where one species touches another. These are some of the borders this book speaks of – lines that do not divide but resonate, that hold together separation and proximity, distance and relation. Together, these essays form a cartography of friction but also affinity, reminding us that to erase all borders is to erase the very conditions of encounter – and that meaning often emerges not at the centre, but at the edges where worlds meet.

The tenth issue of Robida magazine, which celebrated its tenth year of existence, is made of correspondences, conversations, interviews and letter exchanges where the magazine becomes the pretext to establish new relationships or deepen existing ones. While writing and other creative activities can often be solitary endeavours, this year, Robida’s core purpose was decidedly tangible and hands-on: to go out there and talk, discuss, meet, write to each other, organise and create — together.

The issue contains correspondences about, among other things, fire, bread, dreams, wild tongues, public space, local architecture, community gardens, reading practices, sky, bees, postcards, type design, resistance, be-longings, regenerative agriculture, coding, radical equality and more.

Robida magazine n. 8 — Isola Otok Island

Various

Periodicals €25.00

Robida 8 is imagined and organised as a journey, that can explore aspects of island life along a narrative thread, as if developing the structure of an epic voyage: from the Embarkation – where introductory perspectives on islands are offered –, then into the Departure – which considers the islands from afar, as conceptual entities –, through the Tempest – representative of the turmoils and movement that island stand for –, passing from the Strandedness – where the island coincides with stillness –, to finally approach the Homecoming, and the island as repository of collective as well as personal memory. The aim is for this journey to enrich our understanding of islands, as fertile ground for exploring what it means to inhabit a place.

Robida is a multilingual cultural magazine. It is published yearly by the association Robida which is based in Topolò, a village of twenty inhabitants on the border between Italy and Slovenia. The magazine explores different topics – such as abandonment, silence, the relation between domesticity and wildness, forest etc. – which are connected to the place where the magazine comes to life, namely Topolò. The eight issue reflects on the island which is explored through essays, photography, art projects, academic texts, interviews and personal written by authors from all over the world, from Argentina to Poland, from US to Slovenia.
