Welcome for the Belgian launch of Bianca Baldi's book Play-White, with contributions by Amy Watson & Mika Conradie, and a conversation between Bianca Baldi and Zeynep Kubat.
Amy Watson & Mika Conradie will present Assume Form based on their text in Play-White. This will be followed by a conversation between Bianca Baldi and Zeynep Kubat. This event is hosted by Sint Lucas School of Arts Antwerp and Netwerk Aalst.
Rooted in the apartheid era, the racist term “play-white” connotes a black or mixed-race person who lived as a white person. South African artist Bianca Baldi draws from research on biomimicry and her family history to reflect on racial passing and the instability of racial identities. She also looks to literary precedents, such as Nella Larsen’s novel ‘Passing’ (1929). In this way, the body of work ‘Play-White’ alternates between layers of visualisation and moments of discretion to grapple with questions of presence and evasion.
Published by K.Verlag with texts by Bianca Baldi, Amy Watson & Mika Conradie and Shoniqua Roach.
