Working Title

In a reality in which the boundaries between cinema, art, installation and multimedia experimentation seem to be increasingly blurred, History of a Tree by Flatform is a project that sets out to radically alter the idea of the portrait in western art. 

A non-human living organism – the Oak of the Hundred Knights of Tricase, the oldest Vallonea oak in Europe at the age of 900 years – and the territory in which it has stood for centuries become the subject: through a film and a robotized video installation, statements become a portrait, and are transformed into a work of art. 

The book retraces the genesis, development and implementation of this original idea, providing a visual score, the film in 80 images, dialogues in ten languages, the contributions of a tree searcher, an art historian and two philosophers, as well as a series of in-depth essays drawing on the fields of science, history, anthropology, music and linguistics. 

Published in conjunction with the first major U.S. museum show of Joan Jonas’s art in nearly fifteen years, this monograph features new scholarship on her multimedia installations and performance practice from the early 1970s to the present. Inspired by the format of a reader, it breaks new ground by contextualizing and expanding understandings of Jonas’s body of work through three thematic approaches: the critical notions of gender, being and otherness; the politics of landscape and ecology; and new conceptions of medium specificity and un-specificity. Richly illustrated, with never-before-published sketches and drawings, the volume includes an interview with the late Douglas Crimp and Jonas’s personal reflection on their enduring friendship.

Marlie Mul (b. 1980 in Utrecht, the Netherlands; lives and works in Brussels) is characterized by a strong material awareness, spatial thinking, and an ongoing engagement with conditions of labor, systems of value, and forms of collectivity. Her practice foregrounds a sustained interest in sculptural concerns, direct engagement with materials, and processes of layering, transformation, meaning and re-meaning across multiple levels of articulation. Central to this is a continuous process of familiarizing herself and working with new materials and practices, which are repeatedly extracted from their conventional contexts and expanded into new bodies of work. These are, in turn, accompanied and reframed by other materials as well as by more social formats of production and presentation. 

The first comprehensive monograph on Marlie Mul’s work is published on the occasion of her solo exhibition Das Budget (2025) at Kunsthaus Glarus. It offers a comprehensive chronological overview of key bodies of work from the early 2000s to the present and, through a richly illustrated index, unfolds a complex structure of contexts, collaborations, and modes of production. The publication includes new contributions by Annie Goodner, Lili Reynaud-Dewar and Frank Wasser, a dialogue between the artist and the editor, as well as numerous reprints of texts that have accompanied Mul’s work over the years, including writings by the artist herself.

Jack Smith presented his performance Irrational Landlordism of Bagdad as part of the Cologne Art Fair fringe in the summer of 1977. Many other events were documented photographically and can now be found in the Cologne Art Fair archives - not so Smith's performance.

This book shows him in his fair stall and during his performance for the first time. The pictures are perfect documents of a completely eccentric transaction by this pioneering director and performance artist.

Born in Naples, Italy, in 1931, Isabella Ducrot is a young artist with a young career. Like many women of her generation, she moved into art after raising her children. Her formative years were marked by continuous travels with her late husband, during which they amassed hundreds of Persian miniatures and rare antique textiles of many kinds.
