Op 12 november presenteert nY, Vlaams tijdschrift voor literatuur, kritiek & amusement, haar nieuwe nummer getiteld 'seksnegativiteit'. Het thema van dit nummer is geen antiseks-pamflet, en evenmin een kritiek op de optimistische seksuele bevrijdingsbeweging in feministische en queer kringen die zich ‘sekspositief’ noemt. Seksnegativiteit is geen keuze voor of tegen seks. De negativiteit van seks, stellen de makers van dit nummer, wijst op een splitsing in het subject zelf, voorafgaand aan de maatschappelijke strijdvelden in de samenleving. We zijn als mens niet compleet, soeverein of stabiel. Er bestaat geen coherent ‘ik’ dat meester is in eigen huis, of kan worden. Seks maakt het fundamentele gebrek in onszelf zichtbaar, maar lost het nooit op. Seks bevrijdt niet – en bevat toch potentieel voor verandering. 

Deze nY is een poging het overwegend Angelsaksische discours rond dit thema te presenteren aan en te vertalen voor een Nederlandstalig publiek. Daarbij hebben we dichters en denkers gevraagd vanuit hun eigen praktijk een antwoord te bieden op seksnegativiteit. 

Tijdens de presentatie lezen Alara Adilow en Stefa Govaart hun poëzie voor. nY-redacteurs Persis Bekkering en Tessel Veneboer leiden en luiden het nummer in.

Alara Adilow (1988) is een Nederlandse dichter van Somalische afkomst. Ze schreef met haar dichtbundel Mythen en stoplichten (2022) een van de opvallendste debuten van de afgelopen jaren. ‘Een onverschrokken debuut’, aldus de jury die haar bundel over haar transformatie van man naar vrouw bekroonde met de Herman de Coninckprijs 2023, de belangrijkste Vlaamse onderscheiding voor Nederlandstalige poëzie. De bundel werd ook bekroond met de C. Buddingh’-prijs 2023 en stond op de shortlist van De Grote Poëzieprijs. 

Persis Bekkering (1987) debuteerde met de roman Een heldenleven (Prometheus, 2018), die werd genomineerd voor de ANV Debutantenprijs. Haar tweede roman Exces verscheen in de zomer van 2021 en werd genomineerd voor de BNG Bank Literatuurprijs. Ze schrijft voor performance, evenals essays, literaire en kunstkritieken voor onder andere NRC Handelsblad en Mister Motley, en doceert creatief schrijven op ArtEZ in Arnhem (NL). Samen met Marija Cetinić, Stefa Govaart en Tessel Veneboer is ze initiatiefnemer van de onderzoeksgroep Sex Negativity.

Stefa Govaart is danser en performer en schrijft gedichten. Hen organiseert spring* meeting in Performing Arts Forum en is medeoprichter van de research group Sex Negativity (Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis). Hen woont in Brussel. 

Tessel Veneboer is als doctoraatsstudent verbonden aan de vakgroep Engelse letterkunde van de Universiteit Gent. Daar houdt ze zich bezig met queer theorie en onderzoekt de rol van seksualiteit in experimentele literatuur. Ze is medeoprichter van de onderzoeksgroep Sex Negativity.

On November 12, nY, Flemish journal for literature, critique and entertainment, launches her latest issue titled 'Sex Negativity'. The topic of this issue is neither an anti-sex pamphlet, nor a critique of the optimistic sexual liberation movement in feminist and queer circles often referred to as 'sex positivity'. Sex negativity is not a choice for or against sex. The negativity of sex, the makers of this issue argue, indicates a split in the subject itself, preceding any social struggles. As subjects, we are not complete, sovereign or stable. There is no coherent 'I' that is or could become a master in its own house. Sex reveals the fundamental lack in ourselves, without resolving it. Sex does not liberate - yet it is exactly this negativity that allows for the possibility for change. The contributions in this journal originated as literary and theoretical reflections on this topic.

Dutch poets Alara Adilow and Stefa Govaart will read from their work. nY-editors Persis Bekkering and Tessel Veneboer give an introduction to the issue. This event is mainly in Dutch.

Alara Adilow (1988) is a Dutch poet of Somalian origin, currently based in Antwerp. With her poetry collection Mythen en stoplichten (Myths and traffic lights, 2022) she wrote one of the most remarkable debuts of recent years. 'A fearless debut', wrote the jury who rewarded her collection about her transition of man to woman with the Herman de Coninck Prize 2023, the most important Flemish distinction for poetry in the Dutch language. The book also received the C. Buddingh' Prize 2023 and was shortlisted for the Grote Poëzieprijs. 

Persis Bekkering is a writer. She is the author of two novels, writes librettos, essays and art criticism, and teaches at the Creative Writing Department of ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem (NL). She is part of the Sex Negativity Research Collective.

Stefa Govaart is a dancer and performer and writes poems. They organise spring* meeting at the Performing Arts Forum in France, and cofounded the Sex Negativity Research Group (part of ASCA Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis). They live in Brussels.

Tessel Veneboer is a PhD student at the English department of the University of Ghent. Her research extends to the field of queer theory and examines the role of sexuality in experimental literature. She is co-founder of the Sex Negativity Research Group.
