Still Life 4

Lava Lines explores the life forms, contemporary myths and geopolitical powers that shape volcanic landscapes. It gathers poetry, role play's transcription, film scripts and visual works of several artists, to touch on collective memory, non-human agency and myth-making.

The art works presented in the publication are by Leïla Arenou, Francisca Khamis, Naïmé Perrette, Camille Picquot, Rachel Pimm, Francisca Khamis, Juliette Lizotte, Riar Rizaldi and Arif Kornweitz 

It also archives live performances/screenings by Francisca Khamis, Arif Kornweitz, Mika Oki, Chooc Ly Tan, Adán Ruiz, Ana Vaz, and Rieko Whitfield.

For the very first time, the newspaper Font News, published together with the supplement Font Menu, showcases the typographic work of Erkin Karamemet from his own label as printed matter. The large format of the newspaper invites the viewer to appreciate the typefaces in large, poster-like sizes. The curated texts by Gerrit Kotsivos reference pop-cultural curiosities and are further enhanced by overlaid spreads with amusing illustrations by the London-based artist Why Ebay. This limited issue, produced as a special artist edition of only 300 copies, is something for typography enthusiasts to collect, explore, and celebrate contemporary type design.

This collective book devoted to the work of Sammy Baloji explores how the artist, born in the DRC in 1978, attempts to “restore defeated connections”.

How to think about the memory sifted through colonial violence? What effects does the mining of yesterday and today in Katanga and elsewhere have on the project of a common future? How does form make history beyond erasure?

Sammy Baloji (born 1978 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo)'s photographs and videos have their roots deep in the ongoing upheavals in Democratic Republic of Congo: the often invisible consequences of the mining of rare minerals used for electronic components; China's gigantic investments all over the African continent; and his country's industrial and cultural heritage. His photographs have taken out many prizes including the Prince Claus Award, the Spiegel Prize and the Rolex Award and have been shown at the Rencontres d'Arles, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt), the Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon/Paris) and the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (Washington).

What if, when a performance is described as “nothing short of magical,” it is not just a metaphor? Maija Hirvanen and Eva Neklyaeva wrote a book together exploring the techniques involved in creating and curating contemporary performances through practical magic.

Like feminist magic, performance magic is not inherited or exclusive, but learned and inclusive. Anyone can practice it.

This is a book of recipes and spills, based on lived experience, observations and bewilderments of both writers.

A take away cup and a cloud is an essay written alongside the dance performance Seems to be by Denise Lim and Stina Ehn. It plays with a variety of containers–the list form being one. By mixing a personal with a historical gaze it traces the trajectory of mundane commodities and  the replacement of material with imaterial objects brought about to the everyday by technical progress. 

How to Sleep Faster 2 is the second of our biannually published journals that form the backbone of Arcadia Missa’ critical collaborative discourse on participation, post-digital visual-production and institutional subjectivity.This issue explores moments of collapse, shift and potential in a cultural moment framed by economic, political and societal disturbance.

Schismatics consists of 10 short stories, in a fictitious way dealing with forgotten historical personas. Among them, artist Goda Palekaitė includes Mary Anning –– an amateur discoverer of dinosaurs, Emanuel Swedenborg –– a mystic who empirically explored the architecture of heaven, and Essad Bey –– a Jewish-Muslim writer and orientalist. Here their lives are revived and balance between the lines of history and story.

The book fuses elements of fiction, academic writing, and artistic research, and intertwines with rumors, forgeries, and inventions. Previously, its characters and narratives have already appeared in Palekaitė’s performances and installations, which are presented in the middle of this bilingual edition. In the introductory essay, Valerio Del Baglivo analyses the author’s exploration of facts and fiction, the mechanisms of knowledge production, and the trans-chronological perception of time. At the end of the book, Monika Lipšic ‘Riddle’ reflects on a ‘schismatic poetics’. 

Goda Palekaitė is a contemporary artist and researcher whose work combines visual, literary, performative, and anthropological practices. Exploring the politics of historical narratives, the agency of dreams and collective imagination, and social conditions of creativity, her work evolves around long-term projects that manifest as performances, scenographies, installations, and texts. Her performances, solo and group shows are being presented internationally. In 2019 Goda Palekaitė received The Golden Stage Cross and the Young Artist’s Prize for her artistic contributions across disciplines.

What happens when artists play with the codes of the visual and performing arts? Which negotiations take place when you leave your own medium to explore another? As it turns out, those who are considered innovative on the one hand, are often labeled amateur on the other. In twenty-five conversations with leading artists, curators, dramaturgs and production workers Katleen van Langedonck explores which choices are made when creating a contemporary performance, taking into account all layers of the creative process.
