The Blazing World

A dark-humored poet’s novel of cruising, contempt, and database crawling, Stalled Death Train rumbles through the death of David Bowie in 2016 to shake apart its narrator’s sense of self. Nick, a burned out office worker and late-Bowie fanatic, spends his days mourning his fallen star, left to decipher the legacy and lyrics of a singular pop icon whose excesses did not cease, even after his greatest moments had passed. Meanwhile, Nick must solve the mystery of why his boyfriend has begun to self-amputate as a form of autonomously upgrading his dimensions—or at least call tech support before he uploads himself to the cloud.

Rebecca Rowland is one of the sharpest writers that I know. This little book combines elements of life in the publishing industry, #MeToo, and a literal boogeyman. By the middle of the twenty-first century, war, famine, economic collapse, and climate catastrophe had toppled the world's governments. In the 2050s, the insurrections reached the nerve center of global capitalism—New York City. This book, a collection of interviews with the people who made the revolution, was published to mark the twentieth anniversary of the New York Commune, a radically new social order forged in the ashes of capitalist collapse.

Here is the insurrection in the words of the people who made it, a cast as diverse as the city itself. Nurses, sex workers, antifascist militants, and survivors of all stripes recall the collapse of life as they knew it and the emergence of a collective alternative. Their stories, delivered in deeply human fashion, together outline how ordinary people's efforts to survive in the face of crisis contain the seeds of a new world.

Coming back to the body is rarely tranquil. Often it is turbulent, interrupting dominant narratives and entrenched meanings. It is the upset of being alive, and awake to it.

The fourteen texts in this new issue do not shy away from that turbulence. There is joy and there is pleasure, there is shame, pain, and liberation... Each text addresses this dense experience from a singular perspective, yet together they explore what emerges and becomes possible when sense-making and making sense(s) are re-anchored in the sensing practices of the body.

les petites histoires sont quatre courtes fictions contemporaines. Entre le lonely langoureux New York des années deux mille, le pont poétique et capricieux de Louis 2 de Bavière, l'histoire vraie de Sandy Stone dans les seventies et la satire cinglante et drôle d'une galerie d'art, ces livres sont de brefs univers vivants et curieux.

En 2025, quatre petites histoires sont racontées par quatre auteurices dans quatre livres : L'effondrement du pont de Sam Bouffandeau ; The Gallery de S. M. Drogo ; Exit de Juli Le Nahelec; «Que faire de Sandy Stone?» de Mia Trabalon.

L'édition des petites histoires a été imaginée par Élise Comte, Chloé Delchini, Perrine Estienne, Gabriel René Franjou, Justine Gensse, Bastien Hauser, et Cyprien Muth. Ce collectif d'éditeurices est né à Bruxelles, où les petites histoires ont été imprimées, chez Graphius.
